Dr. James Jackson and Dr. John C. Warren initially sought funds for a hospital in Boston, Mass. which would also be made available to student s of the Harvard Medical School for clinical training. It was incorporated in 1811 as Massachusetts General Hospital, and in 1817 Jackson and Warren were appointed as acting physician and surgeon, respectively. The first patients were admitted in 1821. Louis Dienes, 1885-1974, MD, 1908, University of Budapest, was appointed bacteriologist and Director of the Diagnostic Bacteriology Laboratory at Massachusetts General Hospital in 1930. Dienes was the first investigator to identify mycoplasma in human pathologic material, and also the first to recognize that "tuberculin-type sensitivity" characterized the specific immune response in tuberculosis.
